The Lung Unit at The Royal Marsden comprises a team of clinical staff specialising in medicine, radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging. They work in close collaboration with chest physicians, thoracic surgeons and clinical nurse specialists in lung cancer and palliative care in nearby district general hospitals from whom we receive most of our referrals.
The unit is based at both the Surrey and London sites of The Royal Marsden, and sees over 500 new patients each year. Patients are reviewed and treated within multi-disciplinary clinical teams and treatment is based on common clinical guidelines and protocols.
Lung cancer and mesothelioma treatment
The Unit provides state-of-the-art treatment for all forms and stages of lung cancer and mesothelioma within the framework of a comprehensive clinical research programme. It is also a leader in national and international lung cancer clinical trials.
Research
Over the last few years we have broadened our research interests. We continue to place a high priority on drug development and new treatment strategies, and are actively involved in national multi-centre trials to evaluate therapies, particularly in patients with early stage disease.
We are also looking at patterns of referral, the patient pathway and the place of
PET scanning. We have an active research programme in
IMRT radiotherapy and associated support in radiotherapy as well as ongoing genetic work.

- Patients are seen in their local hospital for diagnosis.
- The Unit receives a large number patients for second opinions.
- The Unit offers access to PET scanning and high-dose radiotherapy.
- The Unit provides supportive treatments for dyspnoea.
- All state-of-the-art chemotherapy is offered, including novel agent trials and adjuvant therapy.
