The new unit will open to patients in June 2008 and will provide:
- Outpatient chemotherapy treatment for local patients managed by specialist staff from The Royal Marsden
- Outpatients and diagnostic clinics where patients with suspected cancer can rapidly have tests and results managed by Royal Marsden Consultants working alongside their Kingston counterparts
- A patient information library service managed by Macmillan Cancer Support
- Access to support services such as counselling and complementary therapies managed by Kingston Hospital.
History of the Unit
The Unit is dedicated to Sir William Rous who was Chairman of Kingston Hospital from December 1996 to 1999.
Committed to the improvement of services and the hospital, his experience as a patient led him to contemplate changes that could be made to improve patient care, especially for cancer patients.
A major appeal - Kingston Can - was launched by Kingston Hospital in May 2001 and raised £2.8 million to help build a new cancer unit at the hospital. This was joined with a £1.4 million from The Royal Marsden and £630,000 from Macmillan Cancer Support.
The new Sir William Rous Unit is due to open to patients in June 2008.
