Roger Thomas, Director of Estates at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has retired after 14 years.
During his time at The Royal Marsden, Roger has led the hospital through some complex building projects and ensured a number of VIP visits have gone smoothly, including one by HRH The Queen during The Royal Marsden 150th year.
More recently he played a vital role in the evacuation of patients and staff during the devastating fire on January 2 at the hospital’s Chelsea site. The depth of his knowledge of the hospital building proved invaluable during the blaze, as was his cool, calm professionalism.
His work to help ensure the hospital was back up and running and treating patients just three days after the fire was second to none.
He has also been a valuable member of the hospital’s Management Executive during the planning and implementation of a host of exciting rebuilding plans for both the hospital’s Chelsea and Sutton sites.
A special retirement party was held last week for Roger at the Chelsea hospital where colleagues and hospital management gave him a fond farewell.
Roger joined the hospital in 1994 having come from the local government sector.
Prior to that, he worked in construction with Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd.
Roger has a first class honours degree in civil engineering from Loughborough University and is a chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
