A special reception has been held at The Royal Marsden Hospital to thank businessman Don McCarthy for his £1 million pound donation in memory of his wife Diane.

This tremendous donation from Mr McCarthy, who is Chairman of the House of Fraser Group, will fund the Chelsea hospital’s new Diane McCarthy Medical Day Unit.

Mr McCarthy made the donation to The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign – the charity which supports the hospital – to show his support to The Royal Marsden where his wife Diane was treated.

At the thank you reception on Friday 9 May, which was held at the hospital’s Fulham Road site in Chelsea, Mr McCarthy and his guests mingled and spoke with senior hospital management and staff.

Staff included Soot Me Chow, Sister of the current Medical Day Unit, and other nurses who wanted to personally thank Mr McCarthy for his donation.

The team who treated and cared for Mrs McCarthy, before her death in April last year, were also at the reception to thank Mr McCarthy and his family.

Rebecca Butler, Director of Fundraising, said: “We are so incredibly delighted to receive this donation from Mr McCarthy and his two children in memory of Diane.

“Their continuing support is tremendous and this donation will now ensure that we have a new state-of-the-art medical day unit where patients will be able to receive their chemotherapy in comfort and new, spacious surroundings in brand new facilities.

“Despite the fire in January, we have continued to raise money for this fantastic new facility and this extremely generous donation will now make this a reality.”
