Jill Cooper of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2008.
The Head of Occupational Therapy at The Royal Marsden was awarded the honour for services to the NHS.
Jill said: “I am absolutely thrilled and very proud to receive this award. I hope my colleagues know that it reflects all their hard work too as we have such a great team here.”
Jill qualified from the Liverpool School of Occupational Therapy in 1984 and worked in general medical and surgical rotations plus care of the elderly in Colchester, New Zealand and St George's Hospital, Tooting.
She became Head of Occupational Therapy (OT) at The Royal Marsden in 1992.
Shelley Dolan, Chief Nurse at The Royal Marsden is delighted that Jill’s hard work and commitment to the Hospital and the NHS has been recognised with such an award.
She said: “For many years now, Jill has been a driving force behind the holistic treatment of patients with cancer both within The Royal Marsden and in the wider health sector.
“Her dedication to her specialist field has ensured many patients have been given back the opportunity to live life to the full, following their cancer treatment.”
Jill has helped to run national conferences and write the clinical guidelines for OT in oncology & palliative care.
She co-wrote and edited the book Occupational Therapy in Oncology & Palliative Care, the 2nd edition of which was published in 2006 by Wiley, and was involved in making the CDROM "A Breath of Fresh Air", a multi-professional educational tool in managing shortness of breath.
Jill has just finish co-editing another book, Rehabilitation in Cancer Care, with physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and dietetic colleagues, which is due to be published later this year.
She is also completing her Master’s degree in Cancer Care.
