What others say about us

The Royal Marsden is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in cancer research, diagnostics, treatment and patient care.

We are proud of the work we do and proud that other people think we do great work too.

Healthcare Commission

The Healthcare Commission’s national performance ratings for 2007 ranked The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust as one of the top Trusts in the country. The Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check scores organisations in the NHS and the independent (private and voluntary) sector on many aspects of their performance, including how well they manage their finances (use of resources) and the quality of the services they provide (quality of services).

The Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check showed that The Royal Marsden received the highest score of 'excellent' for both quality of services and use of its resources. It is the only Trust in the country to be awarded this rating for two years running.

During its assessment, the Annual Health Check asked patients about waiting times, quality of care, their overall hospital experience and the dignity and respect they received from staff. The score put the Hospital in the top 3.3 per cent of all NHS Trusts across the country for use of resources and the top 4.2 per cent for the quality of the services provided.

National Inpatient Survey 2006

The Healthcare Commission 2006 Inpatient Survey showed just how highly our patients think of us.

  • 96% of patients who responded said they received either excellent or very good care while inpatients at The Royal Marsden. This is above the national average of 76%.
  • 93% of patients said they were always treated with respect and dignity during their stay at The Royal Marsden and 95% said they were always given enough privacy when being examined or treated. These figures are also above the national averages of 78% and 88% respectively.
  • 91% of Royal Marsden patients who filled in the survey said they had confidence at all times in the doctors treating them, while 84% of Royal Marsden patients said they always had confidence and trust in the nurses treating them, again above the national average of 73%.
  • Patients also praised how staff helped them control their pain with 86% believing staff did everything they could to help them in this area.
  • Hospital cleanliness also rated highly. 73% of patients thought their ward or room was very clean compared to the national average of 53%.
  • 74% of patients said they were ‘definitely’ involved as much as they wanted to be in decisions about their care and treatment, and 94% said they were always given a choice in food during their hospital stay. These figures are above the country’s average statistics of 52% and 79% respectively.

The survey is carried out annually and in total 141,447 inpatients from 167 acute or specialist trusts across England were asked about their experiences during their stay in hospital.

Almost 81,000 patients replied, representing a response rate of 59% across the country.

Of the 798 Royal Marsden inpatients taking part in the survey, 555 returned the completed forms, a response rate of 70%.
