Nick's story
Nick, a patient at The Royal Marsden, was shocked to be diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma in his chest. Mr Khan, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, explained to Nick that he would need reconstructive surgery after his tumour was removed, and this could be achieved using a revolutionary new robot. With enhanced precision, the Symani robot would significantly speed up and improve Nick's recovery.
“I feel privileged and grateful to have been treated with this amazing technology by such a skilful team. It’s been life-changing for me.”
The Royal Marsden is the first hospital in the UK to use this groundbreaking robotic system – and Nick was the first patient to be treated with it. The procedure was a success and enabled Nick to get back to his normal, everyday life, quickly.

Robotic Surgical Fellowship Programme
The Royal Marsden has a world-leading robotic surgical team. With support from people like you we fund the hospital’s Robotic Surgical Fellowship Programme, training surgeons in robotic surgery. These fellows go on to share their expertise in hospitals across the UK and beyond, so even more people affected by cancer can benefit from a speedier and smoother recovery.

Robotic Research
We're currently funding the UK’s first research programme to evaluate the Symani robotic system in reconstructive cancer surgery. This pioneering work allows us to share insights on how best to use the new robotic technology, setting standards for reconstructive surgery around the world.
