Today, in the UK, someone  is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes

That’s more than 1,000 people, every day, hearing the devastating news they have cancer.   We believe that through funding the life-saving research and world-leading treatment and care at The Royal Marsden, we can save the lives of people with cancer everywhere.  With one in two of us likely to receive a diagnosis in our lifetime, cancer touches every family, every generation, every community, which means we need cancer research breakthroughs more than ever before.

Together, Team Marsden is making a difference

When you donate to us, you're directly supporting specialists making breakthroughs in cancer treatment and care.

We work directly with clinicians, researchers, doctors and nurses at The Royal Marsden to ensure that donations are directed where they are needed most. Founded as the first-ever hospital to study and treat cancer, The Royal Marsden continues to make breakthroughs happen. Together with its academic research partner the Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR), is one of the leading comprehensive cancer centres in the world.   Every donation takes us a step closer to another life-saving breakthrough.

A history of charitable support at The Royal Marsden

Charitable support has been a cornerstone of The Royal Marsden since it was founded in 1851 as the first-ever hospital to study and treat cancer. Since then, The Royal Marsden has led the way in cancer research and the development of new treatments that have, and continue to help people with cancer around the world.

1851

The Royal Marsden was founded as the Free Cancer Hospital by Dr William Marsden after losing his wife, Elizabeth Ann to cancer.

1948

The NHS was formed and The Royal Marsden became a postgraduate teaching hospital

2023

The Sutton hospital expanded with the opening of the Oak Cancer Centre. Funded by the supporters of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity’s £70 million Oak Cancer Centre appeal, the state-of-the-art research and treatment facility will help advance the development of new treatments, offering hope for cancer patients worldwide.

1862

The Royal Marsden site on Fulham Road was secured to accommodate the growing need for in-patient care, thanks to funding from Baroness Burdett-Coutts.

1963

A second hospital was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Sutton, Surrey. The expansion increased the hospital’s capacity to treat more patients and train more doctors as world-leading cancer experts.
