This year marks 175 years of The Royal Marsden
Dr William Marsden founded the hospital in 1851 as the first in the world dedicated to the study and treatment of cancer, which – like for so many of us – had profoundly affected his family. The hospital's very founding was possible thanks to the generosity of philanthropists.

The beginning of a pioneering legacy
Across generations, The Royal Marsden has delivered breakthroughs that have revolutionised how we diagnose and treat cancer patients across the UK and around the world – from some of the first chemotherapy treatments to advances in radiotherapy and complex surgical techniques.

Commitment and compassion
These breakthroughs have been made possible by the extraordinary clinicians, nurses, researchers, and support staff whose commitment and compassion define The Royal Marsden, alongside the remarkable donors whose belief in the development of better treatments has driven this innovation throughout the last 175 years.

Today, cancer research, treatment and care is entering a new era of unprecedented possibility
Advances in genomics, technology, and data science are enabling earlier diagnosis, more precise treatments, and better chances of recovery for patients. As a specialist NHS hospital, The Royal Marsden is uniquely positioned to turn research into life-changing progress at pace and scale, leading and collaborating on global clinical trials and improving standards of care for patients everywhere.
