Diagnosing cancer

The Royal Marsden is at the forefront of the latest developments in cancer diagnosis. The revolution in molecular diagnostics, and an ever-improving understanding of our genetic makeup, means our consultants are now better able to determine which treatments are likely to be most effective for each individual patient.

Funding from The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has been essential in making this possible by supporting the establishment of the Centre for Molecular Pathology and the Translational Genetics Laboratory (TGLclinical).

Faster, more detailed diagnosis

The Centre for Molecular Pathology brings together world-leading clinicians, pathologists and scientists. It is speeding up the diagnosis of each patient’s tumour and developing specific molecular tests that measure the effectiveness of different drugs for each type of cancer.

Genetic testing for more patients

The Translational Genetics Laboratory brings genetic testing – a powerful new tool that will transform the diagnosis and treatment of cancer – into clinical practice. Knowing whether a patient has a specific gene mutation is an important part of making personalised treatment plans. State-of-the-art gene sequencing equipment can perform more genetic tests, faster and at a lower cost than traditional methods.

Help us improve cancer diagnosis for all

Developments in our understanding of the complex molecular makeup of different types of tumours, and the importance of the genetic makeup of each individual, is revolutionising the diagnosis and treatment of some cancer types.

We need to expand this knowledge across other cancer types and make genetic testing and targeted treatments viable for more patients, and to achieve this we need investment.

The revolutionary way we diagnose people in our hospitals has far reaching impact, nationally and internationally. Support The Royal Marsden and you’re investing in a future beyond cancer for you and everyone you know.
