Fathers and sons team up to raise awareness of male cancer

Fathers, sons and mentors have once again teamed up for Father and Son Day to increase awareness of male cancers and raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Father and Son Day was set up in 2014 by Daniel Marks and Jack Dyson, two friends who both survived testicular cancer, and whose fathers have also had cancer.

Since then, their campaign has raised more than £100,000 for the charity to help fund the UK’s first Robotic Surgical Fellowship programme at The Royal Marsden.

Throughout June, with a focus on Father’s Day, the campaign is encouraging men to share pictures of themselves with their inspirational dads, sons or mentors and donate to the charity.

Taking part this year was Dr James Larkin, Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden, who was mentored and inspired by Professor Martin Gore (both pictured above).

“Martin motivated me as a junior doctor in 1999 to pursue a career in oncology. I am not alone: a generation of doctors and scientists have been inspired by Martin’s commitment to improving treatment for cancer and his unwavering dedication to patients, The Royal Marsden and the NHS,” said Dr Larkin.

“After completing my training I was lucky enough to join Martin as a Consultant treating melanoma and kidney cancer in 2008. We still talk almost every day and I am still learning from him, not least in trying to be as effective mentor as I can for doctors in training.”

Dr Gore said: "The idea that James still needs mentoring is frankly, a bit of a joke now. His stature on the international scene grows inexorably and he commands great respect from colleagues round the globe.

"James and I are currently undergoing a bit of role reversal – teacher is become student. I am now learning a lot more from him than he is from me. Working with him is a delight: he has great clarity of thought, absolute integrity and a bad sense of humour. What’s not to like?!"

Get involved this year by sharing your own #FatherAndSonDay photo on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and donating £5. Simply text MARSDEN to 70800 to give £5 and nominate friends to do the same. For more information, visit fatherandsonday.com.
